Essential Questions    website: ranchocotate.org/smith

Week 1 & 2: What are the steel and aluminum tariffs and how do they affect our economy?

(1)   So first a tariff is a trade barrier that raises prices and reduces the quantity of goods and services, meaning it reduces our economy. This results in a lower income, reduced employment, lower economic output. Right now Trumps administration's tariffs and trade conflicts aren't enough to affect the economy however it may result in job losses and higher prices for consumers. Trump put tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and Europe, he also threatened to put $50 billion tariffs on Chinese goods, like its already cheap why make us pay more, but a list coming out next week. In doing that China said they will end any agreement with U.S. if we apply the tariffs. I think what trump is doing is totally ignorant because China had already agreed last month to increase their purchases of its U.S. goods and services significantly. Give it to trump to mess up a good thing for us.

(2)   For the people this could eventually drastically change our economy. While the protections we have on steel and aluminum should ideally increase employment in those industries, a company by the name of Trade Partnership Worldwide has estimated that instead a lot more jobs would be lost. That group determined that late in march the metal tariffs, excluding Canada and Mexico, could result in a net loss of 470,000 jobs after a year or two. Now to me if people who have studied this stuff and done their research on the tariffs know we are going to have a huge loss in jobs and a drop in our economy because of Trumps decision why do they want to follow through with this decision. Right now Americans are already suffering with money problems so if these tariffs become set in place then people will end up worse off then they are now. The cost of living will go up and people will be fighting for more work opportunities that are going to be denied to them because of one bad decision. I hope his administration looks into it more and decides against it.

Week 3: What are labor unions and why are they important?

(3)   A labor union or a trade union is an organized group of workers who unite to make decisions about conditions affecting their work. This groups goal is to bring social justice to our nation and economic justice to the workplace. These unions work like a democracy, they hold elections to vote for an officer who'll end up making decisions on behalf of the members. This gives workers more power on the job. The union uses their collective power and resources to demand that politicians address the priorities that matter most to the working people, not just in the interest of the rich and greedy. They are in place so when things like Trump's administration wanting to have a steel and aluminum tariff, they get to discuss this and vote for a decision if it benefits or harms the working class. If they expectation is we will have an economic downfall and less jobs, they are surly going to make sure it won't happen.

Week 4: How are the "baby boomers" and why are they important to you?

(4)   The Baby Boomers generation. So first the term baby boomers" is used to explain a massive increase in births following World War 2. That means they weren’t born from around 1943 to 1964. By the end of 1964 there were 72.5 million baby boomers. Now if that doesn't explain it I'm not sure what will. A lot of people had to hold off on having kids because of the War and the Great Depression. When this started people were home or coming home and finally were getting enough money to go live somewhere they could raise a family. To start off this generation is important to me because my grandparents are baby boomers. Also these people got to live through so many different
events and eras. They went through a ton of U.S. political and social upheaval like race riots, Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam protests, different assassinations(JFK,MLK,RFK), first man on the moon, free love and drug experimentation. This generation literally got it all and it's so important to me that we listen to the story's they have to tell. They went through so much history that we cannot forget, seeing the U.S. that was financially prosperous but also socially turned on it's head makes it all the best time to be alive.

Week 5: What is an apprenticeship program and how can you get connected with one?

(5)   A modern day apprenticeship program provides people with on-the-job training and a classroom instruction, so basically you get to make money while you are learning a trade. When you are an
apprentice generally you start off with easier tasks and as you make progress things get harder and more complex. They usually last 4 years but some can range from 1-6 years, just depending where and what. At the end of the program you receive a certificate of completion and you've reached the time where you can start job hunting. So to get into an apprentice program you need to at least be 18 with a high school diploma (or a GED). Also you need to sign an agreement between you and the sponsor, it outlines the specifics of an apprentice program. After that you are guaranteed training, but you  have to do everything that is required. There are many different programs that you can take for all kinds of skilled fields. You just have to do your research, apply, then work till you get what you want.

Week 6: What is the #MeToo movement and how has it changed the world of work?

(6)   The Me Too movement is an online campaign that supports the survivors of sexual abuse, assault and harassment. The hashtag, #MeToo was spread virally in October 2017 on social media as an attempt to demonstrate the widespread prevalence against it. Though it has barley blown up online the initiative actually began 10 years ago. Tarana Bruke, who is an activist from Harlem, started the movement to aid unprivileged women of color affected by sexual abuse. She has been a victim herself and wasn't afraid to express it to the public. Tarana wants her message to be heard loud and clear. Not just heard either she has the determination to keep going until there's change. Little did she know how much was going to happen. She only meant to bring more awareness to her community. However this became a worldwide awakening, women from all over the world connecting and telling their stories. Girls being brave to stand up and protest. Women will not accept any kind of treatment like this anymore, around our workplaces, school, community anywhere. We are not objects, we are people. Living breathing human beings who do not deserve to undergo any harassment, sexual abuse or assault. Until things are set in place more, they will not give up, this world is going to change.

Week 7: What is the "gig economy" and how has it changed the world of work?

(7)   In a "gig economy" temporary, flexible jobs are a usual. Companies are more likely to hire independent contractors and freelancers instead of full-time employees. So because so many people are willing to work part-time or temporary positions a gig economy ends up cheaper. More services
like Uber or Airbnb become more efficient for those who are willing to use them. However people
who don't use things like that or the internet get left behind by the benifits from a gig economy. Currently America is leaning towards a gig economy, estimates are showing that a third of the working population is already in some gig capacity and that number is expected to rise. With the modern technology it's becoming a lot more common for people to work from home or even traveling. This makes it so workplaces don't require a freelancer to come into an office to work, employers have a wider range of people to hire, and computers have advanced so much they can replace jobs people had before. This saves them money, especially since most time employers cannot afford to hire a full-time employee to do the work, so hiring part time or temporary employees they can take care of busier times or take a specific project they have to work on. This makes it much easier for employers and employees. For me I want to travel, so if i could take my work with me on the go this would make my life easier and more fulfilling for me. Also if i ever wanted to change my career it would make it a lot easier for me. I am sure this is already a lifestyle for people in our working community, a gig economy has changed the world of work drastically but for the better.

Week 8: Who are the biggest employers in Sonoma County and which ones would you like to work for?

(8) Some of the biggest employers in Sonoma County are in the medical field, casinos, produce or grocery stores. So first is Kaiser Permanente with 2,555 employees, second is Graton Resort and Casino with 2,000 employees, third is Sutter Health with 1,797. These may have changed because I
believe the statistics are from 2016 but in only two years I'm sure not by much. I personally wouldn't mind getting into the medical field so Kaiser or Sutter i wouldn't mind. I've been thinking about becoming a nurse. Though I am not set for what I want to do for work. However for some of the other companies on the list with lesser employees, one of them could become a better starter job for me. I could end up going to Safeway or Amy's Kitchen.  Safeway isn't far behind the others it has 1,200 employees, and Amy's has 870 employees. I personally would have to work at Safeway just because it is closer to my house but both would be great for anyone looking for a job.

Week 9: The Infrastructure Report: "Investigate the infrastructure that makes life in Rohnert Park so magical" (view online)

(9) Rancho Cotate's water supply once used; by flushing, drinking fountains, or sinks, it is sent to
18400 Neeley Road in Guerneville, CA 95446. That is the treatment plant address. This is where they
magically take all your waste. The company can take in about 710,000 gallons per day, that is the maximum amount for their facility. At the plant they use an advanced treatment process to remove any bacteria or pollutants. After that they check all the treated wastewater and run some tests to be sure it is safe, it has to be at the California Department of Health Services standard. Most of the waste water is reused and is kept seperate from the fresh drinking water. It's used in like sprinklers or irrigation, things like that. Our healthy drinking water comes back to us through a different pipe system. First it comes through a filtration system the clear water passes through it. It has different materials composed of sand, gravel, and charcoal to remove bacteria, dust, viruses and more. The last step is to disinfect it with floride, chlorine,  and chloramine. I personally don't like people adding chemicals to anything i consume however it does help to kill parasites, bacteria, germs and more so people don't sick.

Week 10: What is a farm subsidy and why have they been in the news?

(10)  Farm subsidies, also known as agricultural subsidies, are payments and other kinds of support from the government to farmers and other agricultural buinesses. It is seen to some people as a crucial part to our economy however other people feel like it is a form of corporate welfare. It was set in place during the great depression so farmers wouldn't go bankrupt, because 25% of people lived on farms which is 6.5 million farms,  and to keep a food supply for American's. But since then the numbers have dropped. Now it's about 2.1 million farms with only 3 million people living on them. That's dropping more then half and it's expected to get lower over the years. With those statistics makes sense why they would need the subsidies especially because it's more in demand. There has been a lot of controversy over the recent years and people are still arguing to end the subsidy. Many politicians believe that they are actually harming both consumers and farmers. All farmers are set with a limit to how much they an spend but the bigger companies have consistently found ways to avoid these limits. Wealthy growers are payed even on good years and its taking money away from other areas that need funding. That is why people want to reform them so it benifits us all.

Week 11: What is Operation Faithful Patriot and how does it affect you?

(11) Operation Faithful Patriot is what is now known as border support operations or border mission.    Donald trump ramped up his anti immigration rhetoric, and was insisting that he was going to send US troops to the border so they can stop any migrants attempting to reach the US. In doing that it could cost us between $200M and $300M and honestly that is such a waste of money. I really hate that he is trying to waste our resources on something that has no point to it. We should be focusing on helping people get their papers and become legal so they can come into america and make their lives better. The US was founded on so many immigrants from all over when they were fleeing their countries from persecution, so I don't see why it should be any different now. This affects me because I have friends who aren't from here, so either their parent aren't legal or their who family isn't including them. They are constantly living in fear of having their whole lives taken away. This just isn't okay and having a president who thinks it is is even worse.

Week 12: How is your portfolio going and why is it an important task?

(12) My portfolio has been going slow but my work is good. When I first started the class I totally didn't know this was a thing. After I figured out it was part of my grade I still didn't know how to make this or anything we were supposed to write. But as time went by in the class I actually made some friends and they helped me out. Now I am doing the blogs and as I work I realize it's an important task because the questions we are given get us thinking. It makes us more aware of everything going on in the world. Some of the topics I had never heard of and I didn't know how important they were. Or the topic was something I felt strongly about and just had no idea it was so important to others or the media. These assignments are good for us and help us learn more about the world we have been apart of for so long.

Week 13: Does PG&E have responsibility to clean their lines? Should they be liable for fire damages?

(13) Over all PG&E is only responsible for restoring your electrical service, a lot of the other responsibilities are the city or the property owner's.  PG&E does have vegetation management duties required by law. Also certain other codes they have to follow for safety reasons including power lines, that makes it so it is safer during fire season. Depending on the situation PG&E might be
responsible however there would have to be an investagation to prove it. Lets say there was a power line that was not up to date on safety standards and no one was sent to fix it. If a fire had started there because the line hit a tree or something, and that fire did damage to people's property, they should be held responsible. But if the fires occurred because of something unrelated then no. However there have been many complaints and people pointing the blame to PG&E for different reasons. Could be fault wiring, they weren't up to safety standards, honestly we won't know for sure till it's proven. But what we do need is to help all those affected by it and if in doing that we discover who is at fault then they get what they deserve and pay for their dues.

Week 14: What is the Russian River Watershed and what are it's boundaries? 11/26/18

(14) First watershed is an area or a ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers, basins, or sea. Watersheds are usually named after the body of water they drain into so the Russian watershed is just that. The Russian River watershed is a diverse region of about 1,500 square miles that goes through Mendocino and Sonoma Counties. The mainstream of the Russian River flows about 110 miles from Redwood Valley through potter valley all the way to the Pacific Ocean ( near Jenner). It's watershed covers a lot of land and it's home to about 360,000 people, 238 streams and creeks and tons of animals. I think this is really cool to know used to live in Mendocino county right by the Russian River. Then when I moved up here I moved by watershed from it, so knowing in a way it's all connected makes me feel close to home.

Week 15: How many people have to work hard for everything compared to how many people have things handed to them?

(15)  From personal experience it's like half and half for both categories. I am one of those people who does not have anything handed to me. My whole life I've had to get used to working my butt off for anything. Simple things or just things I wanted to do for someone. My family has always struggled with money I'll admit it were even broke right now. My best friend has her birthday and graduation coming up, so i decided to spend hours on end working just to make a little bit of cash to get her stuff. While in a family where there is plenty money coming in a kid could ask their parent to if they could buy something for their friend and they'd just do it. Growing up for a long time I did not know that's how some people got to live. Honestly to me the problem with this question is its not asking the right thing. It should be asking us why are there so many people struggling compared to other people who live life comfortably. That I can tell you, it is because of Americas messed up distribution of wealth and our policies screwing over the poor people. While the rich get richer, the poor get poorer.

Week 16:  How is your portfolio going and why is it an important task?

(16) My portfolio honestly took me longer then expected. I summarized a bit in my last question that asked about it why that is an everything that happened. But now that I'm on my last question I have to say that I actually liked doing these. I will admit some weren't topics that totally interested me but It feels really good to learn about things that I wouldn't have gone out of my way to read to begin with. These topic questions got me thinking about alot of things in the world around me. But it also taught me a valuable lesson. If I don't understand how to do something I need  to ask for help. That way I won't get behind and I'll be able to focus more on work that is fun in the shop class.
